1.5 Using Rubrics to Score Essays and enhance your Writing
You can see the key points that separate one score from another if you study the rubric or scoring guide that follows. When you get a score on a rubric, you can observe exactly how good your writing was on each trait or characteristic. For instance, you know what you need to work on most if you had scores of 5 on every trait except organization, and your organization score was a 3. You know exactly what you have to do.
The “3” score lets you know your essay showed a basic structure but lacked transitions and had not been unified and consistent throughout. If you like the “5” score for organization, your essay will need to show a logical structure or pattern with some transitional devices. So, you’ll want to learn some organizing patterns plus some devices that are transitional. Later parts of this Guide will reveal how.
